All exchange and visiting students planning studies, research or traineeships at the European Humanities University (EHU) must check the entry and residence requirements applicable to their visit before travelling to Lithuania.
The procedure depends on your nationality, existing visa or residence permit, purpose of visit and length of stay.
For university documents and guidance, contact the Student Service and International Mobility Unit at international@ehu.lt.
- EU and EFTA Citizens
Citizens of EU and EFTA countries do not need a visa to enter Lithuania. Bring a valid passport or national identity card.
Check with the Lithuanian Migration Department whether residence registration or a certificate is required for your planned stay and exchange arrangements.
2. Non-EU and Non-EFTA Citizens
Students who are citizens of non-EU/non-EFTA countries must arrange the appropriate visa or other legal basis for their exchange studies at EHU before travelling to Lithuania. A Lithuanian national visa (Type D) is normally required for semester-long exchange studies, unless an exemption applies.
If you hold a valid residence permit or national visa issued by another EU Member State for study purposes, special student mobility provisions may apply.
Contact international@ehu.lt before applying to confirm the procedure applicable to your nationality, existing immigration documents and exchange period.
If you need a Schengen visa, obtain it before travelling. Check the official Lithuanian visa information for the applicable procedure.
3. Exchange studies lasting more than 90 days
A national visa (Type D) may be available to students admitted under an international student exchange programme. Contact EHU before applying so that we can provide the relevant university documents.
If you already hold a residence permit or long-stay visa issued by another EU country for study purposes, special student mobility provisions may apply. Send details of your document and exchange programme to the Mobility Unit before applying for a Lithuanian visa.
For research visits and traineeships, the appropriate immigration procedure may differ from the procedure for exchange studies. Contact EHU about the purpose and duration of your visit.
How to Apply for a National Visa
- Contact international@ehu.lt with your full name, nationality, country of residence, intended exchange dates and details of any existing visa or residence permit.
- EHU will provide the university documents required for your application, including a mediation letter number, where applicable.
- Complete your application and upload the required documents through MIGRIS.
- Follow the instructions for booking an appointment and presenting original documents and biometric data.
Applications submitted from abroad are handled through an authorised external service provider. Check the Migration Department’s service locations and application conditions. Eligibility to apply at a particular location must be checked before booking.
If you are already legally staying in Lithuania, check whether you can apply through the Migration Department. Submitting an application does not automatically extend your authorised stay.
Application Documents
Follow the checklist provided in MIGRIS for your application category. Documents may include:
- a completed online application;
- a valid passport and a copy;
- the mediation letter number provided by EHU;
- your EHU Letter of Acceptance or other confirmation of the visit;
- an existing visa or residence permit, where applicable;
- proof of sufficient funds, such as a scholarship confirmation or bank statement;
- valid health insurance;
- a photograph or biometric data, as required.
For a national visa, your passport should normally have been issued within the previous ten years, contain at least two blank visa pages and remain valid for at least three months after the requested visa expires.
National visa insurance must meet the applicable requirements, including coverage throughout the Schengen area and a minimum insured amount of EUR 30,000.
Check the current financial requirements and accepted document languages in MIGRIS. Arrange translations where required.
Processing Times and Fees
National visa applications are normally examined within 15 calendar days after acceptance. Examination may be extended to 45 calendar days. Allow additional time for appointments and document preparation.
Visa fees, exemptions and external service provider charges depend on the application procedure. Confirm the amount payable before your appointment.
Before Travelling
Check the validity dates of your passport, visa or residence permit and insurance. Carry your acceptance documents and accommodation details.
Tell EHU immediately if an immigration delay affects your arrival. Do not assume that visa-free entry allows you to remain in Lithuania for an entire semester.
