EHU Strengthens Support Measures for Students, Faculty, and Families

Following the designation of the European Humanities University as an extremist organization by the Belarusian authorities, EHU has continued to monitor the implications of this decision and provide support to members of its community who may be affected. The University became aware of reports concerning searches, questioning, and other actions directed at individuals connected with EHU. These developments have created serious concerns not only for students and staff, but also for their family members, some of whom may face increasing pressure and uncertainty as a result of their association with the University. In response, EHU activated additional support measures and intensified coordination with Lithuanian authorities, international partners, diplomatic representatives, and civil society organizations to help safeguard the wellbeing, security, and future educational opportunities of those affected.

“The wellbeing and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and their families remain our highest priority,” said the Rector of EHU dr. Vilius Šadauskas. “Our focus is not only on responding to immediate challenges, but also on ensuring that members of our community have access to the support, resources, and opportunities they need to continue their academic and professional journeys with confidence and security.Since the situation emerged, EHU has activated a coordinated support and response framework focused on three priorities: safeguarding academic continuity, providing practical support to affected community members, and strengthening long-term stability and security for the University community.

In recent weeks, the University has introduced a number of measures to assist students and faculty members facing uncertainty. Administrative procedures related to study arrangements have been simplified, accommodation support has been made available for students who require relocation assistance, and dedicated consultation mechanisms have been established to provide timely information and individual guidance. EHU has also worked closely with Lithuanian institutions and diplomatic representatives  on issues related to visas, residence permits, other legal pathways available to community members and additional options that may facilitate safer mobility for students who need to leave Belarus.

Recognizing that many community members require personalized assistance, the University has expanded access to legal consultations through external human rights experts, introduced in-person advisory meetings, strengthened psychological support services, and established a dedicated support hotline operating as a single point of contact for individual cases. EHU representatives have also maintained regular engagement with students, faculty, academic leaders, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations in order to assess needs, coordinate responses, and adapt support measures as circumstances evolve.

Alongside these efforts, the University has reinforced cybersecurity and data protection measures and continues to work with its institutional partners to ensure the highest standards of information security. Guidance on personal and digital security has also been provided to members of the community.

“EHU remains committed to its academic mission, the principles of academic freedom, and the continued delivery of high-quality education, research, and student support. While the external environment remains challenging, the University continues its work with confidence, supported by its international partners, the Lithuanian authorities, and the broader academic community.”
