European Humanities University hosted Icelandic Cultural Day on 8 June 2026, welcoming members of the EHU community to an event organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Iceland in Helsinki, accredited to Lithuania.

The event took place as part of the National Culture Days at EHU initiative, launched by the Rector . The initiative is designed to strengthen dialogue between the university community and diplomatic and cultural institutions operating in Lithuania, while introducing students to the cultures, academic traditions, and opportunities offered by different countries.

The programme featured a lecture titled “History of Icelandic Independence,” delivered by H.E. Mr Harald Aspelund, Ambassador of Iceland. The lecture offered participants an opportunity to explore the historical development of Icelandic nationhood, sovereignty, and independence, with the speaker enriching the discussion by sharing elements of his own family history and thereby illustrating how broader national processes are reflected in personal and intergenerational experience.

Following the lecture, attendees took part in an informal meeting with Ambassador Aspelund. The discussion provided a valuable opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn more about Icelandic culture, history, and contemporary life, as well as to engage directly with the Ambassador in an open and friendly atmosphere.

Icelandic Cultural Day contributed to EHU’s ongoing efforts to promote intercultural dialogue, international cooperation, and a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural and academic traditions represented within the European community.
