From workshop to international project: EHU students present research in sound design

Students of the Department of Humanities and Arts at EHU participated in the workshop “The Animated Life of Sounds”, which took place from 31 March to 2 April with the participation of composer and sound designer Andrea Martignoni (IT/DE).

The event program was dedicated to the transformation of the role of sound in animation against the backdrop of the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence. Michael Margulis (UA/DE), a producer from KAPI studio, also took part in the session.

The program addressed the context of tension between the ability of AI for stylistic imitation and issues of authorship, intent, and creative agency in music and animation. Discussions focused on sound as a structural and narrative element in animation that shapes rhythm, editing, and perception.

“The animation of sound is the animation of the heart. AI is capable of generating sound, but only a human creates music that speaks, calls, resonates — and transforms sound into meaning.”

Over three days of intensive work, participants created and presented a collective showreel of experimental research in animation sound design. This event is part of a broader research and educational context at the intersection of sound, animation, and Artificial Intelligence, which is being developed and explored at EHU.

Another important outcome of the workshop is the invitation of the top participants to take part in an actual international project. This opens up broad opportunities for both professional collaboration and career growth for the Department’s students.
