Alexandr Marchenko 

Professional theatre director, actor, producer, and curator of theatrical projects

Born in 1979 in Mogilev 2002 – graduated from the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts, specializing in theatre directing and teaching special theatre disciplines.

From 2001 to 2018 –  worked at the Theatre of Belarusian Drama

2009 – became the head of the Belarusian Drama Center. As the head, I organized various master classes, staged readings, preparation of play sketches, presentations of plays and drama collections, conferences, roundtable discussions, and playwriting competitions. 

Since 2018 –  has been working as the head of theatrical projects at ART Corporation

For nine years, I’ve been teaching acting skills and theatrical games at a theatre-focused school and at the Belarusian University of Culture and Arts. I also taught directing in Professor Anisenko V.D. ‘s workshop from 2002 to 2007.

July-August 2018 – a graduate of the International Visitor Leadership Program “Technologies in Theatre in the USA,” organized by the U.S. Department of State 

In collaboration with various theatre and entertainment organizations, I’ve created a series of significant cultural projects in Belarus. 

2012 – organized a theatre laboratory for young playwrights that introduced a new model of interaction in the cultural space and contributed to the emergence of several independent theatrical projects, which have since become international and annual events that continue to thrive to this day.

2015 to 2017 – as a curator and theatre director I spearheaded projects aimed at expanding the boundaries of theatre and bringing it beyond the traditional stage. These immersive productions included site-specific performances and theatrical experiences in urban spaces.

2014 –  directed the play “MABYT’?” (Мабыць?) at the Theatre of Belarusian Drama, based on documentary interviews exploring urban spaces, national and civic identity, and self-determination. These performances were accompanied by discussions with the audience, examining the alignment of the opinions expressed on stage with their own perspectives (http://kultprosvet.by/mabyts-kultprosvet/).

2016 –  in collaboration with the Visual and Performing Arts Center “ART Corporation,” directed the play “Opium“. This was the first crowdfunding-supported production in Belarus, with the audience actively engaged in supporting a contemporary play that addressed the impact of “distant” socio-political events, such as the conflict in Ukraine, on the lives of ordinary individuals. The play was showcased at the international theatre forum “TeArt” in Minsk in 2017 and also performed at the international festival “Belaya Vezha” in Brest in the same year. The project was invited to perform in the theatre of Hannover, Germany in 2017 and participated in the “TEATRIUM” festival in Klaipeda, Lithuania in 2018 

2017 – in collaboration with “ART Corporation” and the Belarusian Aspen Community, directed the play “Anti(gone)” . The play incorporates live testimonies from leaders of Belarusian society across various fields, including business, sports, civil society, media, and more, creating a new method of social communication and discussion on current (primarily ethical, civil, and cultural) issues.

2018 – directed the play “Adult Education” at ART Corporation. The play was ranked among the top three programs of the BelarusOpen international forum, according to the festival’s foreign guests.

2019 – collaborated with the Visual and Performing Arts Center, ART Corporation, to create the play “Primitives.” The production was showcased at the International BRUSFEST Festival in Moscow, Russia, in December 2020.

February 2020 – directed the play “Sources of Light” at the ART Corporation as part of the activities of TOK Theatre. The play was based on the eponymous play by Andrei Ivanov and received media coverage and acclaim from reputable sources Media about the project:

December 2020 – directed the play “Breathing Together” at the Old Theatre of Vilnius, Lithuania. In February 2021, the play participated in the “Re:writing the future” festival in Berlin. The team behind the play received the “Borisas Dauguvietis Earring” award at the national theatre awards “Golden Crosses of the Stage” in Lithuania in Spring 2021.

December 2020 – participated in the international BRUSFEST festival in Moscow, Russia, with the play “Primitives.”

As a curator, conducted the “Ready-Made World” laboratory dedicated to the Ready-Made technique implementation in theatre.

2020 – curated the annual TEART School, which focused on the theme “Theatre in Times of Crisis“.

June 2021 – directed the solo performance “Naked” based on the play by Mila Fakhruddinova, performed by Edita Uzaite. The premiere took place at OKT and continues to run regularly. The play was also showcased at the Mono Performance Festival in Visaginas in October 2022.

July 2022 – Pedagogue specializing in documentary theatre methodologies for adolescent migrants from Belarus and Ukraine, conducted within the residency organized by the Free Theatre in Warsaw.

Director of the play “Monologues of August,” created in collaboration with a team of actors from Belarus and Lithuania at the European Humanities University. Premiere in October 2022.

Director of the staged reading of Maria Bershadskaya’s play “Maria’s Neighbors” as part of the international project “Neighbors” in March 2023.

Author and participant of the project “Peaceful Atom?” created and showcased within the framework of the OSUN Science Shop EHU in April 2023.

Director of the performance “Primitives 2.0” with students from the Theatre Arts and Acting program, summer to autumn 2023.

Director of the project “While History Is Writing Itself,” Berlin, Gorki Theatre, October 2023.
A staged reading of Yulia Timofeeva’s play Extremists was presented in October 2023 and in June 2024.

Artistic Director of the international theatre project “Contextual Echoes of Civic Resilience,” June–December 2024, implemented by The German Marshall Fund of the United States (Washington), the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, and the Department of Humanities and Arts of the European Humanities University (Vilnius), with the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
